A weave inspired by waves

Inspired by pattern research by weaving artist Anni Albers and the Op Art of Bridget Riley, our Ripple towels attempt to capture the magic of the movement of water in a classic checkered textile pattern. We chose 3 decor-friendly color ways so these towels will feel at home in your bathroom or at your side on bathing adventures.

After releasing these towels, we were fortunate to learn that the roots of hypnotic weaving patterns like this run deeper than we knew. Binakol weaving has been a craft in the Philippines since long before the violent colonization of Spain and has ties to spiritual and cultural traditions of the Ilocos region.

Many of the weavers keeping this tradition alive are aging, and it’s future is uncertain. To support this craft, we’ll be donating to the HABI Philippine Textile Council to support these weavers and the education of the next generation. We encourage you to learn more about this tradition and share what you learn, as this exceptional craft has been sorely underrepresented in our Western-biased arts history and education.

You can also purchase Filipino-made Binakol blankets, rugs and other woven products directly from Kristine Peñafiel Salviejo, Narra Studio, Maari, and Balay Ni Atong.

Jacquard loomed in the USA

The soft and absorbent loops of cotton in these towels are crafted on Jacquard looms at a family-run business in Illinois. Jacquard looming results in a mirror image on the reverse side of each towel.

Care: Wash warm and tumble dry with items without zippers, buttons, or anything that could snag the loops. Use biodegradable detergent to keep our waterways healthy.

Beautiful but snagged

I love this towel, it’s so pretty and a good size for a mid size person like myself. It’s not as big or as thick and my bath sheet from pottery barn but it’s good. Only problem was I washed it one time and had a handful of places on the towel start popping threads out. For the price of this towel I think that’s crazy. I still like it though. And I don’t mean it was shedding loose strings, it was strings that were pulled out in loops that will have to be cut off.

Not very absorbent, but cute!

These towels check the boxes as far as aesthetic but when it comes to drying off after a shower or dip in the pool, they miss the mark. They’re thin and not absorbent. Best as a surface to sit or lay out on.
